Oh I have opinions, lots of them

So I have my first official doctors appt on Sept 2nd. I can't wait. I wish I could go sooner! I don't know if I will like the doctor. I picked this place only b/c it is on my insurance and b/c it is only 5 mins up the road from my work. I figure that will be the most convenient. It is a group practice, which I am fine with. There are so few private practices anymore anyway. At least with a group, I will meet all the doctors at least once so I don't have to worry about some stranger delivering my baby if my private practice doc gets sick or in on vacation, etc. I still think I like the idea of a midwife, but I need to learn a little more as I have no desire for natural child birth! I know very few things, but I know I was the epidural as soon as humanly possible. Actually if they can give it to me at 8 months, that would probably be good. Give me a month to get used to the feeling of being numb down below. Yes, yes, I know epidurals could end up making me paralyzed. But I am going to take that chance over feeling my vag split open. But that's just me. I also know I want to breastfeed. Even though I am very worried about getting orangutan titties. I am alread extremely flat chested, but at least there is a little perk to them. I have seen what happens to your nipples, oh my god, I didn't know they could get so big, it scares me actually. But when the milk is gone, those things are going to fizzles like a 3 day old party balloon. Uh oh. I don't even want to breast feed b/c I believe it's that much better for my baby, I want to breast feed b/c it is hella cheaper and burns a ton of calories. Materialistic and Superficial, yes, but that's how I feel about that :) In fact I almost think I would prefer a c-section. But I won't go there unless I have to. So, I know what I want already on some things. I am seeing a woman doc for my first visit and we have the same first name. Sounds like a good sign to me.

Ok wait this is so funny! I am all for the meds too! Bring it on! Just as soon as I walk in the door hook me up to something.

You can have a midwife and still get the full benefit of epidurals and other pain meds. The midwife is just more likely to be open to non-traditional things like water birth, laboring standing or squatting, birthing balls and using things like Evening Primrose Oil to help the whole cervical preparation bit in the last month along and stuff like that. But they'll be just as happy, and able, to have you shot up with all the allowed pain meds in the world. They just can't cut you open if you have an emergency c/s - but if you use one like mine they're associated with a hospital so there's one of those on staff in the event one is needed.

cool! keep up the running at all costs!! our stories sound similar...training for a marathon and then, bingo! and as best you can, stop worrying...nothing you will actually do can possibly hurt your kid. i was a little freaked too but much less so as things go on...

You're funny. Haha. Good luck on your doctor appointment!! I want that epidural asap too. I am afraid (terribly) of breastfeeding. I love the idea that its good for the kid and burns all the more calories, but it scares the **** out of me! Completely, I can't imagine something sucking milk out of me. Ugh. It just grosses me out. I have issues.

Is there a way to make your blog private so that you can't see it when you click on your profile? It might be cool if I made a separate one, mostly for me, so that I don't bore everyone on my running blog. I can't decide.

Glad I found your blog! I'm with you on the epidural... I used to be in pharmaceutical sales so I'm all about using appropriate drugs in appropriate situations... and labor would be one of those!

hey, congrats! Great idea for a separate blog to track all this fun stuff.

All philosophical/health arguments aside, I'd highly recommend at least preparing a little for drug-free birth on the off chance that you CAN'T get an epidural...

My L arrived SO quickly -- just a matter of an hour after the first noticeable contraction (I like to say it's because of my incredible pain tolerance and athletic conditioning, but really, I'm probably just an idiot about paying attention to my body). I moseyed into the hospital completely dilated, then truly panicked when they told me it was much too late for the epidural I'd planned. I held off pushing long enough to get one, and it barely took effect about the time the delivery was done.

So, no matter what you plan, be prepared for anything!
